Races of Byd Arall

The races of Byd Arall are as diverse and storied as the lands they call home.
Humans arrived after the Cataclysm, shaping nations like Cymry, Albion, Tir Emrith, Eisenreich, and Brynareth with their ambition and adaptability.
Dwarves and Halflings, migrants from an older plane, settled long before the Cataclysm—dwarves carving mighty halls in the mountains and halflings living alongside them as trusted allies and trading partners. Over time, many halflings migrated to human lands, forging a second bond with their newer neighbors.
The Fey races—Elves, Gnomes, and Goblins—are native to this world, tied to its magic and wild places.
Among them, stranger folk exist: the mechanical Poppets, given life through magic, and the towering Orcs of Drekkarheim, who remain proud and independent.
Each race bears its traditions, rivalries, and alliances, weaving together the complex cultural tapestry of Byd Arall.

Descended from those who arrived in Byd Arall after the Cataclysm, they blended their own traditions with the ancient ways of the Tuatha de Danann, honoring the old gods even as they built thriving towns and fortified cities. Known for their poetic language, craftsmanship, and fierce sense of independence, Cymry’s humans value loyalty to kin and homeland above all. Many are farmers, herders, and skilled artisans, while others take to the sea as traders or serve as warriors defending their borders from fey incursions and foreign threats. From the bustling markets of Carmarthen to the windswept cliffs of Tenby, the humans of Cymry embody a culture that is equal parts tradition and tenacity, carrying the soul of their nation in song, story, and steel.

Descended from post-Cataclysm migrants, they established a realm of stately cities, manicured countrysides, and proud military garrisons. Albion’s humans prize discipline, etiquette, and mastery of craft, whether in diplomacy, commerce, or warfare. Their architecture favors tall stone spires, grand halls, and well-ordered streets, reflecting a belief in stability and permanence. While often viewed by others as reserved or formal, the people of Albion are fiercely patriotic, willing to defend their island nation’s sovereignty with both pen and sword. From the gaslit streets of their capital to the windswept naval ports that guard their shores, Albion’s humans stand as stewards of tradition, guardians of their realm, and keepers of a legacy they believe must endure for generations to come.

The humans of Eisenreich are a disciplined and industrious people, their culture forged in the shadow of mountains, deep forests, and iron-rich valleys. Descended from post-Cataclysm settlers, they built their nation on the principles of order, hard work, and martial strength, blending their heritage with advanced metallurgy and engineering unmatched in much of Byd Arall. Eisenreich’s cities are defined by towering stone fortifications, clockwork mechanisms, and workshops that echo with the ring of hammers and the hiss of steam. Militarism runs deep in their society—every citizen is expected to serve the realm in some capacity, whether in the army, the foundries, or the great iron fleets that patrol their borders. Though some outsiders see them as stern or unyielding, the people of Eisenreich are fiercely loyal to their homeland and its rulers, valuing discipline, precision, and unity as the foundations of their strength.

Their culture is a unique fusion of Welsh and English traditions, blending the artistry, storytelling, and clan loyalty of the Cymry with the structured governance, trade expertise, and industrious spirit of Albion. This dual heritage has made them skilled negotiators and sought-after traders, serving as a vital bridge between their neighboring nations. Tir Emrithans favor practical yet elegant attire, often mixing fine fabrics with durable materials suited for travel and commerce. Their cities are bustling trade hubs, where accents, fashions, and ideas mingle freely, reflecting their role as both cultural crossroads and economic powerhouses.

Living along rugged coastlines and scattered islands, they are masters of the sea—shipwrights, navigators, and raiders who have sailed far beyond the known shores of Byd Arall. Their settlements, often built around sheltered harbors or perched upon windswept cliffs, are alive with the sound of gulls, the crash of waves, and the bustle of markets where foreign goods mingle with local craftwork. Brynareth’s humans value courage, honor, and self-reliance, with a strong oral tradition of sagas recounting the deeds of their ancestors. Quick to laughter and quicker to battle, they are as comfortable trading fine goods in distant ports as they are drawing steel to defend their own. To the Brynareth, the sea is both a pathway and a proving ground—a living force that shapes their way of life and binds them together as a people.

Renowned for their skill in metallurgy and precision craftsmanship, they were the first to introduce firearms to the humans of Albion, forever altering the balance of warfare on the island. Their gunsmithing is a closely guarded tradition, with each weapon treated as both a work of art and an instrument of war. While fiercely protective of their independence, these dwarves maintain strong trade ties with Albion, exchanging their weapons, armor, and crafted goods for the foodstuffs and resources their mountain homes cannot produce. Stoic and unyielding, they value honor and craftsmanship above all, and once their trust is earned, they become steadfast allies whose word is as unbreakable as the steel they forge.

The dwarves near Cymry are a fiercely militant people, dwelling in the formidable strongholds of Kragthorum, Khazrundar, and the smaller but well-defended Durnkarak. Hardened by centuries of conflict with the dangerous creatures of the mountains and the lingering threats of the wild fey, they have forged a culture where every citizen is trained in the art of war. Their warriors, clad in masterfully crafted plate and wielding weapons of unparalleled quality, are renowned for their discipline and ferocity in battle. Staunchly allied with Cymry, they have fought side by side in many wars, including brutal campaigns against Albion. From these wars, they acquired the knowledge and skill to forge firearms—adapting the weaponry first introduced to Albion by other dwarves—and have since incorporated them into their military tradition. While they rarely leave their mountain halls except in times of war, their loyalty to Cymry’s people is unwavering, and when they march, they do so with the combined might of stone, steel, and gunpowder.

Relations: Shunning human politics, they remain within their highland domains, yet will defend ancient passes and borders without hesitation. Of all elvenkind, the Caerthwyn are the most often glimpsed in human lands—though never without purpose.
